second body paragraph(:

Second Body Paragraph:

The surprise ending makes the story interesting and it makes the read want to read it. If you had a boring story with no surprise ending no one would want to take the time to read it. You always was something surprising in your stories. “I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him”. “Here! Here! Is the beating of the old mans hideous heart”. It the first quote, he’s telling you that he was very rude and mean to the old man but then the week he wanted to kill him, he wanted to be very nice and kind to him. In the second quote he’s describing the heartbeat of the old man when he heard it with his own two ears. Surprise ending is one of my favorites because it always gets you wondering.

Intro Paragraph.

Have you ever felt like someone was watching you? They were watching ever move you make; looking for the right time to pounce. In this story Edgar Allen Poe keeps the reader on the edge of your seat, not knowing what is going to happen next. Tell-tale Heart is about a crazy man, who is Vexed by an old mans pale blue eye. This crazy man ends up killing the Old guy, all because of a pale blue eye. This story is very mysterious and the reader is never going to know what to expect. Tell –tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe, displays a sinister mood, fantastic plot, and a very interesting surprise ending.

Body paragraph

The dark and gloomy mood in Tell-tale heart gives the reader a sense of death and doom. “I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed so tar no light shone out.” this quote displays it is dark and suspenseful. Another quote is, “ Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of moral terror”. This quote I think has meaning, to me it means that the old man feels the crazy guys presence. I also think that he crazy guy feels the old mans terror. I believe that this story, Tell-tale Heart, is a story that displays a very descriptive mood, that make the reader jump of the edge of his seat with excitement.

first body paragraph(:

First Body Paragraph:

The mood in the story is very mysterious and it makes the reader wonder why Edgar Allen Poe used the descriptive words he used. “I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed that so no night shone out.” “His room was black as pitch with the thick darkness.” In the first quote, the author tells you how he wants no light to show in the room and he wants to be in a dark place. The second quote tells you that his room is very dark and the thickness of the darkness is very spooky just how the author describes it in the story. I think the mood is very helpful because you can picture the imagery in your head much easier.

Tell-Tale Heart
So far this year we have read at least 4 stories and out of those 4 stories my favorite was Tell-Tale Heart. This is because Tell-Tale Heart it was very interesting and it kept me wanting to read more. The ending was very shocking and when i finished it made me want to read it again. This book first starts with this crazy old man with a neighbor that has a messed up eye. It really bugs him and he thinks the only way of getting rid of it is by murdering the guy! In the end the guy goes nuts and tells the police where he hid the body. The police were shocked to find it under the floor boards, they were even more shocked when they found out that he was the was the murder. Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe has descriptive figurative language, suspense, and a shocking conclusion, and that what I loved about the book.

In Tell-Tale Heart the descriptive language is very well put, it really pulls you into the story. " Until, at length, a single dim ray, like the thread of a spider" is just one use of the figurative language in this story. there is also a lot more such as, " And now a new anxiety seized me". Now that's an excellent way to use descriptive language!

The suspense in this story makes you just want to jump out of your skin. It sends a scary shiver through your bones and makes your mouth drop completely. Its probably going to be one of the best suspense stories we read this year. "Although he neither saw nor heard-to feel the presents of my head within the room. Now that's a good way to catch a reader! But that's just one way he uses suspense in this story. If you ever need to use suspense just think of Edgar Allen Poe.

The conclusion in this story is just shocking. He ends up going nuts and actually killing the old man. He suffocates the old man with his mattress. " He was stone dead". After he killed him he cut the old man up and hid him under the floor boards. He said no one would ever find him unless.... he went crazy and turned himself in because he thought the old man was still alive, when it was only him losing his mind. He screamed "I did it, I killed the old man!" They arrested him on the spot. " His eye would trouble me no more" said the man as they pulled him away.

In this Edger Allan Poe did as best as he could to pull the reader into his story. I think he did an excellent job on it to. He captured the reader by using figurative language, suspense, and an amazing conclusion. And in the end Edgar Allen Poe is one crazy person but he was still a very influential writer.

Torrie Reading Response

In class we read the Tell-tale Heart, Edgar Allen Poe does an extraordinary job of bringing his characters to life, and writing a suspenseful rising action and climax. Tell-tale Heart is a story about two men, they are good friends, and one takes care of the other. One man, who claims he is not insane, is put on edge because of the old man's vulture like blue eye. not able to continue to see the eye everyday, he decides to kill the man. Stocking him each night, waiting for the time that's right for the kill. Watching him sleep day after day, silently, carefully, slowly, until one day the door slips from his fingertips. the old man wakes up alarmed by the noise. Not able to postpone the dreadful task any longer, he crushes the old man under his own bed. Then continued to take the man apart and hide each limb under the wooden floor boards. Soon the cops showed up, due to report of loud noise. The man is calm throughout the questioning, acting as if nothing is wrong. Time goes by without him giving any suspicion away. He thinks he's gotten away with it, and he has, almost. But the cops will not go away, he soon cannot take it any more. He snaps. Unable to hide it any longer, he reveals his dreadful doings.
I think a part of what makes this story good is its characters. Edgar Allen Poe has an amazing talent for creating interesting characters, such as the old man. I love the way he tells of the mans blue eye, but his finest character creation was the insane man. He described this crazy man in such a way that made me believe such a person could exist.
The suspense in this story was unbelievable, you couldn't help wondering when the insane man was going to make his move. He would wait night after night, just watching the man sleep. You could never be sure when something was going to happen. The stories suspense is what made me want to continue reading.

Edgar Allen Poe's Tell-tale Heart, had a great rising action leading to an even better climax. Just when you started to wonder what was going to happen his climax came keeping you hooked on the action. In his story the climax was when the crazy man finally kills the blue eyed old man, crushing him under his own bed. The climax completes the story.
Edger Allen Poe is an extraordinary Author, he writes his stories to the best of their ability. Using all of these components to make the reader feel exactly the way he wants them to feel.

intro and first two body paragraphs

-Have you read any of Edgar Allen Poe's stories? Their pretty good, he knows how to make a story descriptive. I like refer to him as the Poe man. My favorite and only story I've read by him is Tell-Tale Heart. In this short story there is a crazy man that is annoyed by another guys eye and he ends up killing him because of it. Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe has descriptive figurative language, jaw-dropping suspense, and a unpredictable conclusion.
-The descriptive figurative language in Tell-Tale Heart makes the reader feel like their right in the story. "Until, at length, a single dim ray, like the the thread of a spider,"is one of many descriptive sentences in Tell-Tale Heart. It describes the light that pass through the door and the room. Another descriptive sentence was, "And now a new anxiety seized me." This describes when he gives up to his guiltiness after he kills the man.
-The jaw dropping suspense in Tell-Tale Heart makes the reader not expecting anything! "So i opened it-you can't imagine how stealthily, stealthily." This is when he opens the door as quiet as possible. I think Poe repeats himself to make it sound more suspenseful."For a whole hour I didn't move a muscle and in the mean time I did not hear him lie down." He says this when he's watching the man with the messed up eye sleep but he wakes up.
-The unpredictable conclusion makes a great story better. "He was stone dead." This is when he smothers him with a mattress. "His eye would trouble me no more." Poe says this when he's killed the man and cut off his limb, and hid him under the floor boards. Then too make it even more unpredictable Poe loses himself to his guilt. He tells the cops what he did and where he put him.
-Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe has descriptive figurative language, jaw dropping suspense, and an unpredictable conclusion. If you haven't read an Edgar Allan Poe story you should deffinately consider it. In Tell-Tale Heart there is a crazy man who is greater vexed about this man's eye.

Have you ever thought you were the best at something; well no one likes a showoff. The story Toni Cade Bambera wrote Raymond’s Run he was inspired to write Raymond’s Run because of something that happened in his life.  Raymond’s Run is about a girl who thinks she is the best at running and she has conflicts with people in the story and with her brother Raymond. Out of the three stories I picked Raymond’s Run because it has a good meaning to it. The three best components that I picked from the story is the plot, the Characters, and the Conclusion.

The stern but happy mood gives the reader a sense of learning and understanding. The mood is stern but happy by, the girl is very stern and she thinks she is the best so she brags to a bunch of people. She thinks she’s the toughest thing and she can punch your eye off. It’s also happy because her attitude changes towards her brother Raymond.

After he did, he hid the old man under the room's carpet.

Do you like the feeling of goosebumps on your skin and chills going up your spine? Do you like stories that involve creeps and terrible deaths? If so, you will love the story Tell-tale Heart. The short story, Tell-tale Heart, is a creepy, spine-tingling, short novel written by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is about a creepy man who was crazy for his whole life. During the story, his craziness leads him into danger and ends up taking away the life of his old friend all because of his bothering eye. In the end, he does something very unexpected which makes you want to read more to find out. The story includes these 3 literary components: a frightening mood, amazing imagery, and a interesting plot.

First, the imagery. The amazing imagery in Tell-tale Heart gives a sense of realism and life-experiences. "He was stone dead," (pg. 629) is a quote from the book that describes the death of the old man. This quote," he had the eye of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it," is a great example of imagery because it helps describe the condition of the old man's eye and is found on pg. 625. As you can see, the imagery of Tell-tale Heart is very amazing and well described.

Second, the plot. The interesting plot gives a sense of amazement, curiosity, and surprises! This quote," I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever,"(pg.625) explains that the crazy guy was willing to kill the poor old man because of his scary-looking eye! But in this quote," I loved the old man. He never wronged me. He never gave me insult,"(pg.625) means that the old man never did anything wrong to hurt the guy. That's what makes it so interesting. Why would you kill someone if they did nothing wrong? As you read more, you will find amazement, curiosity, and surprises in the plot.

Third, the mood. The frightening mood in Tell-tale Heart gives the reader a sense of death and scare. The mood is also described as scary and death-threatening! For example:" Presently, I heard a slight groan,"(pg.627) is a quote from Tell-tale Heart that describes the scariness of the sounds around him, and the other part," And I knew it was the groan of mortal terror,"(pg.627) explains the slight groan in the story. As you can see, the mood in Tell-tale Heart is very frightening and scary.

Overall, the short story,Tell-tale Heart, involves a frightening mood, amazing imagery, and an interesting plot. This story is one of the best stories from Edgar Allan Poe which is why I chose it. So if you are wanting to read a short story that includes crazy people, tragic deaths, and surprise endings then Tell-tale Heart is the type of book for you.

I'm doing my response to literature on "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe. The story was mainly about a crazy man that absolutely hates some man's big pale blue eye. So one night he gets up and sneaks into this guys house and kills him. Then he disasembles him and hides him under the floor boards. That morning the police come and he goes crazy and tells the cops where the dead body is. I think that this book displayed a very dark mood, has fantastic imagery, and has an interesting plot.
This story is very dark and creepy because the narrator is always being very descriptive about everything. One significant quote that supports this is, "It was still as dark as midnight." Another one is," I cut off the head, arms, and legs. As you can see he is very discriptive in his writing and is also very gory.

Have you ever seen an eye like a vulture or have meet a crazy guy? Then you'll like the story Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is about a man who has been crazy and is annoyed by . His craziness leads him to take away the life of his friend living with him. The crazy guy ends up confessing in the end. The story Tell-tale Heart displays 3 components: great imagery, good metaphors , and an amazing plot.

First, the imagery in Tell-Tale Heart shows a sense of realism and life- experience. There were some quotes that caught my eye that represented imagery. One was," There was no pulsation. He was stone dead". This quote was on page 629 and thought it described the death of the old man. Second quote i thought was good imagery was," He had the eye of a volture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it," this quote is on page 625 and described the old man's eye condition. The imagery in Tell-Tale Heart is very discriptive.
Second, the mood in Tell-Tale Heart gives the reader a sense of darkness and death. An example quote of mood is," And i knew it was a groan of mortal terror," on page 627. It explained a certain slight graon in the short story. Another example was," Presently I heard a slight graon," can be found on page 627, describes the sounds around him were scary. Mood in Tell-Tale Heart is frightening and scary.
Lastly, the interesting plot Tell-Tale Heart gives the reader a great sense of amazement, curiosity, and a surprising ending. This quote from page 625," Imade up my mind to take the life of the old man, thus rid myself of the forever," made me think that the mad man was willing enough to kill the old man just because iof his volture-looking eye. The second quote came from page 625," He had never given me insult. For his gold i had no desire.I think it was his eye," it explains that the old man never did anything to hurt anyone. As you read the short storty you'll find a plot with amazement, curiosity, and suprise endings.
In conclusion, the short story, Tell-Tale, has some great imagery, frightening mood, and an interesting plot. If you like short frightening stories, you should read Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. I choose this story because the events that happened seemed really interesting.

Response To Literature

“True! -Very nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and I am!” (Pg 625) Edgar Allen Poe wrote this quote in the spine tingling, most suspencful story, “Tell Tale Heart.” The narrator says that an old man’s eye is making him deathly mad. He spies and waits until the right time comes to end the man’s life. Will he get away with it? This short story will shock you with the answer. This story has an amazing exposition, high climax, and a twist ending. Tell Tale Heart is truly a maddening story.

One of the many things this author is well at is his exposition. He explains how being insane makes him better at life. He said things like, “You fancy me mad?” (Pg. 626) or, “this disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed them,” (pg. 625) He explains how the old man’s evil pale blue vulcher eye distresses him. They were far from enemies it was just the eye he despised. This exposition was definitely an amazing one.

Not only was his exposition fantastic, so was his climax! It tells how he plans to kill the old man, taking his dreadful eye with him. “The old man’s hour had come!” (Pg. 628), shrieks the narrator. He makes it sound like he is a cat, almost pouncing to attack. After killing the poor old man, he pulls up the floorboards and throws his disembodied limbs underneath and acts like nothing had ever happened. “He was dead as stone,” as the author, describes it (Pg 628). Too bad the neighbors heard the old man scream.

In this horrid sounding book, the twist ending makes it all the more interesting. The neighbors call the police and the author made it sound like the killer didn’t have a worry in the world. “I had nothing to fear,” he said in such a casual voice (Pg 629). He lets the police in, and actually takes them into the room he killed the old man. They all sit in the room and talk, but then it all goes wrong. The mad man would bet his life that he heard the dead mans heartbeat, getting louder and louder! He goes mad, “I foamed-I raved-I swore!” (Pg 630) It seems by every minute he gets crazier and more mad! After he could handle no more he yelled “Villains! Dissemble! No more! I admit the dead! - Tear open the planks-here, hear! It is the beating of his hideous heart!” (Pg 630) They finally take him away.

Tell Tale Heart is the most interest book I have ever read. Do you think Edgar Allen Poe is mad? Aren’t we all though? In a sense of Edgar’s perspective? This book really made the audience read to understand. The great exposition, high climax, and twist ending made this book Poe’s own. This suspenseful book I guarantee you will remember in the long run.

Response to Literture

Do you like scary stories during Halloween time, well then this story is for you.The book Tell-Tale Heart by Edger Allen Poe is very good and intensely good. In this story there is an old man that doesn't think he is crazy and believes he is more in tune with his senses then other people in the world around him. But he has this old man that is his best friend but he has this eye, an eye like a vulture that drives the crazy man nuts. In Tell-Tale Heart the story has very good imagery, a scary mood, and an exciting plot.

The imagery in Tell-Tale Heart makes you go home with nightmares that's how vivid and scary the imagery is. "He was stone dead" (pg. 629), is one of the intense quotes he uses during this story. Also it makes you wonder how he killed the man to have him just laying there dead not moving like a stone. Another quote from the story is, "The disease sharpened my senses.", (pg. 625), is good imagery because it explains what the crazy man thinks plus it makes you think that he has like a extreme specialty. That's why his imagery is so good.

The mood is so scary in this story that it makes you jump right out of your seat in some parts. One of the quotes in this story on page 625 "I loved the old man" makes you believe that he really didn't want to kill the old man but he needed to. Then he kills the man because of the eye. "Pale-blue eye, with film over it" pg. 625 also has a mood maker by describing the eye and how dreadful it is. It makes you wonder if the eye has like powers or something random effect on people. Plus you always feel like your going to see an eye like this one day.

The plot in Tell-Tale Heart gives the reader a sense of death. In the story the man says, "The old mans hour had come"(pg. 628). This is what the man says right before he is about to attack the old man and kill him. Also he says this because he's been spying on the man every-night for the last few weeks. Another quote from the story is "I admit the Deed". He says this when being interviewed by the police for the mans death. Plus his heart his beating and he thinks it's the old man's heart still alive and it scares him.

As from what I told you, you can see that Tell-Tale Heart the imagery is excellent, the mood is scary, and a plot that will keep you on your seat. As the man is crazy and the old man is innocent he still kills him. The old man though has an eye, and eye that looks like a vultures and scares and bothers the crazy man. This is the response to a good short story Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe.

Tell-tale Heart by:Courtney cook

Tell-tale Heart is a very heart racing story. The plot of the story is exciting. This is a story about a crazy man that wants to kill the old man with the vulture eye, yet the old man never did anything to the crazy guy. The mood gives the reader a sense of terror and death. Also, the imagery in the story gives the reader a great picture of what's happening. These three Literary components are what makes the story very interesting.
The plot of the story is what keeps you thinking. "I grew very pale, how, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton."Eder Allen Poe said this on page 628. This is supposed to make the reader think that the man is growing very nervous. Also, it makes you think that the man is guilty. "For minutes longer I refrained and stood still but the beating grew louder, louder!!"This quote was on page 628. The crazy man thought the old man's heart was still beating. He got very scared and nervous, afraid the cops would hear. As the crazy man did not know that his heart was beating loudly from him being afraid. The plot is interesting but the mood is more terrifying.
The mood of Tell-tale Heart gives the reader a sense of terror and death. "It was the groan of mortal terror." Edger Allen Poe is telling the reader that there is a sense of death. The old man had a lot of terror from killing the old man. "The hellish tattoo of the heart increased." The a author was referring to the heartbeat of the old man. "As it grew louder and louder," the crazy man is guilty of his own crime, but the eye drove him mad. The mood has a sense of terror but the imagery gives the story more excitement.
The imagery in the story gives you a great picture of what's happening in the story. "He had the eye of a vulture." The crazy man had a fear of the old man's eye. He said, "it follows me around like a vulture looking for it's prey. I undid the lantern cautiously oh, so cautiously-cautiously-i undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye." This quote is on page 626. The crazy man had been undoing the lantern for hours making sure that only a thin ray of light fell upon the eye. It took the crazy man along time to plan the killing of the old man. The old mans eye troubled the crazy man no more, yet it was the guilt that kills him now.
Tell-tale Heart is a heart racing story. The plot of the story, tells you that the story is very exciting. The mood of Tell-tale Heart gives the reader a sense of mortal terror and death. The imagery in this story gives you a great picture of what's happening. The plot, mood and imagery make the story interesting but the characters make the story twisted.

Response to Literature

If you like reading about crazy people and death, then this story is for you. The book is Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is about a crazy man and his neighbor. The neighbor was an old guy with an eye that really bugs the crazy man. The crazy man decided to kill the old man so he would never be bugged by his eye again. The police came to his house to ask questions about the death of the neighbor. The crazy man thought he heard the beating heart of the old man and admitted the deed. Tell-tale Heart has great mood, plot, and imagery.

The mood in Tale-tale Heart gives the reader a sense of horror. "I loved the old man."(
pg.625), this is something he says that makes me wonder why he killed him. "Pale blue eye with a film over it."(pg.625), That is what the eye looked like. That's also why it bugged him so much.

The imagery in Tale-tell Heart really puts a picture in the readers head. "He was stone dead."(pg629) This is something he says that makes you think how he killed him to make him that dead. "The disease sharpened my senses."(pg 625) He says this and it makes you think how crazy he is.

The plot in Tell-tale Heart gives the reader a sense of death. "The old mans hour had come"(pg.628) . This is something he said right before he killed the old man. "I admit the deed."(pg.630) He says this to the policemen when he thinks he hears the old mans heart beating.

Like i said Tell-tale Heart has a great mood, imagery, and plot. Tell-tale heart was a very good story and i will definitly be reading it again. The crazy man killed him for a really stupid reason. So if you have a vulture eye and you live next to a crazy guy you better watch out.

Have you read any of Edgar Allen Poe's stories? Their pretty good, he knows how to make a story descriptive. I like refer to him as the Poe man. My favorite and only story i've read by him is Tell-Tale Heart. In this short story there is a crazy man that is annoyed by another guys eye and he ends up killing him because of it. Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe has descriptive figurative language, jaw-dropping suspense, and a unpredictable conclusion.

Have you ever read the short story Tell-tale Heart? The short story Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe has a wide variety of imagery, a suspenseful mood, and a serious plot. This short story is about a crazy man that wants to murder an old man for his evil vulture eye and his loud heartbeat. It also has an ending that you would never think would happen.

The wide variety of imagery tells the reader how the narrator felt when he saw the vulture eye and heard the old man's loud heartbeat. One example of imagery from the story is "There came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton." That is an example of imagery because it gives the reader an idea of what the old man's heart sounded like when he was sneaking up on him while he was sleeping. Another example of imagery is the old man's heart "...the heart would be heard by a neighbor!" That is an example of imagery because it gives you an idea of how loud his heartbeat was during the night. As you can see, the crazy man thought that the old man's heartbeat was loud and disturbing.

The suspenseful mood gives the person reading Tell-tale Heart a sense of how mad the crazy man felt sitting there, watching the old man. One example of of the mood is "True!- nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and I am." That is an example of mood because it shows that the narrator is nervous. The crazy man was watching the old man because he hated the way the light shined right on his eye in the dark, looking like a vulture eye. Another reason he was watching the old man during the night was because he hated how loud his heartbeat sounded. He thought it was loud enough for the neighbors to hear it. All in all, the old man's crazy roommate was truly mad.

Tell-tale Heart has a serious plot because he was planning on killing the old man because he was mad at his loud heartbeat that he thought the neighbor's could hear. An example of the plot is "He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was in his eye." This is an example of the plot because it tells you how he felt about his eye and also, how the old man felt about the mad man. In conclusion, the old man was nice and pleasant to the crazy man while the crazy man was rude and impolite to the old man.

In the end, the crazy man ended up killing the old man. After that the cops came by to investigate because the neighbors reported screaming next door. The crazy man gave himself up to the cops. Tell-tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe was suspenseful, serious, and had a lot of imagery. As you can see, Tell-tale Heart ended in a different way than anyone would have thought.

How to Create a Historical Web Site

What is a Historical Web Site?

A historical web site is a collection of web pages, interconnected with hyperlinks, that presents primary and secondary sources, interactive multimedia, and historical analysis. Your web site should be an accumulation of research and argument that incorporates textual and non-textual (photographs, maps, music, etc.) description, interpretation, and multimedia sources to engage and inform viewers about your chosen historical topic.

How is a Web Site Different from Other Categories?

Web sites can display materials online, your own historical analysis as well as primary and secondary sources. These can be photographs, maps, documents, or audio and video files. Web sites are interactive experiences where viewers can play music, solve a puzzle, or look at a video or click on different links. Viewers can move through the web site in various undirected ways. Web sites use color, images, fonts, documents, objects, graphics and design, as well as words, to tell your story.

Getting Started

  • Decide whether you want to create your web site as part of a group or on your own.
  • Research your topic first. Examine secondary and primary sources. From this research, create your thesis. This will be the point that you want to make with your historical web site.
  • Narrow in on the content of your web site. Decide what information you want to incorporate in your web pages, including any photos, primary documents, or media clips you may have found. You should be sure to have plenty of supporting information for your thesis.
  • Organize and Design
-Keep It Simple: don't waste too much time on bells and whistles. Tell your story and tell it straight.
-Borrow Ideas from Other Web Sites: find design elements that work and imitate them on your web site. Just remember to give credit where credit is due.
-Make sure every element of your design points back to your topic, thesis, and/or time period. There should be a conscious reason for every choice you make about color, typeface, or graphics.

HP Performance

How to Create a Historical Performance

What is a Historical Performance?

A performance is a live, dramatic presentation of your topic's significance in history. You may perform individually or as part of a group. A performance should be a scripted portrayal based on research of your chosen topic. Your script should be structured on a thesis statement, supporting statements, and a conclusion. Your performance should have dramatic appeal, but not at the expense of historical information.

How is a Performance Different from Other Categories?

The performance category is the only one that is presented live. Developing a strong narrative that allows your subject to unfold in a dramatic and visually interesting way is important. Memorizing, rehearsing, and refining your script is essential, so you should schedule time for this in addition to research, writing, costuming and prop gathering.

Getting Started

  • Decide whether the chosen topic will be most effective as a group or as an individual performance.
  • Research the topic first. Write down important facts or quotes that may be important to the performance. Write a thesis statement, supporting statements and a conclusion. Think about how these might become part of your performance.
  • Prepare a script. Brainstorm with general ideas and how they might be presented. If a group is performing, each member should describe different ways in which characters might interact.
-Make sure your script contains references to the historical evidence found in your research.
-Using actual dialogue, quotations, or brief excerpts from speeches are good ways to put historical detail into your performance.
-Remember that your script should center on the thesis statement, supporting statements, and the conclusion that you developed from your research.
  • Prepare the set. Think about different types of sets that might help depict your topic. Is there a prop that is central to the story?
  • Prepare the blocking. To "block" a performance is to determine where the actors will stand, move, and/or relate to the set. You should think about these movements when deciding what type of set to design.
  • Prepare the costuming. Good costumes help make a performer convincing, but make sure they are appropriate to the topic. You do not need to purchase or make an elaborate costume - sometimes simple works best (e.g. white shirt and dark pants/skirt can fit almost any time period).
  • Practice, practice, practice! Work on speaking clearly, pronouncing all words correctly, and projecting your voice so that the judges and the audience can hear every word. Rehearse with the set and full costumes as often as possible.

HP Documentary Guidelines

How to Create a Historical Documentary

What is a Historical Documentary?

NHD documentaries present information about an event, person, place or idea from the past through a ten minute presentation that showcases documents, images, photographs, and actual footage of the topic you are researching. Your documentary needs to have both primary and secondary research but also be an original production.

How is a Documentary Different from Other Categories?

Creating a documentary is different from other categories because of the technology necessary. Before deciding to create a documentary, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I interested in using computers, cameras, and other technologies?
  • Can I conduct and record interviews (for the purpose of including film clips in the documentary)?
  • Can I find film clips to use in my documentary?
  • Are there enough still photographs related to my topic and that I can use in my documentary?
  • Do I have access to equipment that will be needed to make a documentary?
  • Is creating a documentary the best way to show off my topic?

Getting Started

  • Create a Documentary Notebook to write down all of your ideas and keep your research organized. Watch historical documentaries and write a list of what you think makes a great historical documentary
  • Make sure you have access to
    -a computer
    -a video camera
    -editing software
-supplies: batteries, blank DVDs or videotapes, paper, pens, props
  • Research the topic first. One way to choose your topic is to select a commonly known story and then find a different angle that brings something new to it. Remember that there are many unknown stories that also should be told. Regardless of the topic you select, choose one that truly interests you, and remember to put it into historical context.
  • Keep a database. It is important that you have a database where you keep track of all of the information you are gathering. A database is simply any place where you can collect and easily access your sources and production materials.
  • Create a Timeline. Before you jump into your project, it is a good idea to create a preliminary timeline of when you want to finish important steps along the way, especially the start and end dates of pre-production, research, production, and post-production.
  • Create a budget. On the practical side, you need to have a sense of the costs of doing this project. Remember you don't have to break the bank to make a film. Spending more money does not make a film better in quality.

History Project Research Guidelines

Building Historical Context and Conducting Research

I have my topic and I know how it is connected to the NHD theme. What do I do next? Build historical context by reading different types of sources...

Nothing in history happens in a vacuum. To understand the connections between your topic and the time period, begin reading about the time period and as you read ask yourself questions: why did my topic happen at this particular time and in this particular place? What were the events or the influences that came before my topic? How was my topic influenced by and how did it influence the economic, social, political, and cultural climate of the time period? All of these questions will help you to build the story of your topic and grasp the historical significance.

While you are researching a topic for an NHD project, you will read different types of sources: tertiary sources, secondary sources, and primary sources.

Primary Sources

A primary source is a piece of information about a historical event or period in which the creator of the source was an actual participant in or a contemporary of a historical moment. The purpose of primary sources is to capture the words, the thoughts and the intentions of the past. Primary sources help you to interpret what happened and why it happened.

Examples of primary sources include documents, artifacts, historic sites, songs, or other written and tangible items created during the historical period you are studying.

Secondary Sources

A secondary source is a source that was not created first-hand by someone who participated in the historical era. Secondary sources are usually created by historians, but based on the historian's reading of primary sources. Secondary sources are usually written decades, if not centuries, after the event occurred by people who did not live through or participate in the event or issue. The purpose of a secondary source is to help build the story of your research from multiple perspectives and to give your research historical context.

An example of a secondary source is Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson, published in 1988. They are a great starting point in helping you see the big picture. Understanding the context of your topic will help you make sense of the primary sources that you find.

The primary and secondary sources McPherson used are listed in the bibliography. Another researcher might consult these same primary sources and reach a different conclusion.

Tertiary Sources

Tertiary sources are based on a collection of primary and secondary sources and may or may not be written by an expert. Tertiary sources should never appear in your bibliography but are only used as exploratory sources, to give you ideas about what to research. Wikipedia is not a reliable source and should not be utilized or appear in your bibliography.

Examples are dictionaries, encyclopedias, fact books, and guidebooks.

Research Central

Citations/Bibliographies

To record the information the two acceptable styles of writing for NHD projects are Turabian and MLA. Historians use Turabian but we know that many classes in middle school and high school teach the MLA style. It does not matter which of these two styles you use, but it is important to be consistent. For help with questions of citations, you can check out Turabian or MLA guides from your local library.

Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography is required for all categories. The annotations for each source must explain how the source was used and how it helped you understand your topic. You should also use the annotation to explain why you categorized a particular source as primary or secondary. Sources of visual materials and oral interviews, if used, must also be included.

List only those sources that you used to develop your entry. An annotation normally should be only 1-3 sentences long.

  • Source (example):
Bates, Daisy. The Long Shadow of Little Rock. 1st ed. New York: David McKay Co. Inc., 1962.
  • Annotation (example):
Daisy Bates was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and the one who met and listened to the students each day. This first-hand account was very important to my paper because it made me more aware of the feelings of the people involved.

Classification of primary or secondary source. You should use the annotation to explain why you categorized a particular source as primary or secondary, If that is likely to be at all controversial. Historians do sometimes disagree and there's not always one right answer, so justify your choice to the judges.

Secondary sources which include primary materials. You also may use the annotation to explain that a book or other secondary source included several primary sources used for the paper. Examples: "This book included three letters between person X on the frontier and person Y back in New England, which provided insight into the struggles and experiences of the settlers." "This book provided four photos of settlers on the Great Plains and their homes, which were used on the exhibit." Please note that the materials included in secondary sources, like your text book, are not primary in this instance because they have been taken out if their original context. For example, an image of a painting may have been cropped, or a letter may be missing sentences.

Fuller explanation of credits for documentaries. You are supposed to give credit in the documentary itself for photos or other primary sources, but you can do this in a general way, such as by writing, "Photos from: National Archives, Ohio Historical Society, A Photographic History of the Civil War" rather than listing each photo individually in the documentary credits, which would take up too much of your allotted 10 minutes. You then must use the annotation in the bibliography to provide more detailed information.
