Robert j Schumacher attended Lebanon high school the instant he graduated from high school he join the army, even though his parents hated the idea of him in the army. When in the army and after he had past basic training he remembered the movie the green berets, and to be a part of them would be a dream come true to Robert. So he instantly went into training for the green berets. The green berets were U.S Special Forces during the Vietnam War, they were highly trained in gurilla warfare they were also an elite force of Para jumpers. They would spend weeks in South Vietnam’s jungles hunting and destroying Viet Congs. Roberts’s tour started on 08/04/1970 “the beginning of the end for Robert”
Before Robert had left he had met a girl they met briefly in person but had talked to her twice on the phone. He had fallen in love with her the second he met her. But he had to leave for his tour in South Vietnam. This upset his girlfriend very much, because they were planning on getting married. So While Robert was stationed in Vietnam when him and his troops would go to villages he would get pottery and send it to his girlfriend. “This was sweet but the pottery would stop soon enough.”
Robert was stationed in a South Vietnam base called Chu lai. It was never comfortable in any base because of the humidity, rain, spiders, snakes, and the constant sound of gunfire and bombs in the distance. This made any solider uncomfortable no matter how hard they tried to ignore it.
03/28/1971 in south Vietnam at chu lai base a mortar strike hit the base hitting some of living quarters and out side around the base killing several men. The Viet congs attacked the base with mortars and rockets then they ran in to over throw the base. Robert was one of the men to die that night but he died fighting the VC’s and protecting and saving his fellow soldiers and fellow Green Beret members. Letting some of them escape into the jungles.
Lastly Robert was a very brave solider fighting and dieing for his country, and trying to stop the civil war in Vietnam. Robert had a family and soon to be wife that he left behind to save fellow soldiers. That night he was only a month away before going home, he was only 21 when he died a rocket killed him.
