Have you ever heard of poaching? There’s a business called poaching and it is the reason for many animals going endangered and black market thriving. Poaching is a problem that is major across the world. Sometimes it can be good, but mostly it is bad. Although poaching has been around for centuries, it is becoming an increasingly intense problem that can be solved by putting more wardens in common hunting areas and targeting poachers.

Poaching is one the number one reason hunting is becoming less liked and more not wanted. According to CBS News, “poachers are taking mommy elephants for their ivory but leaving the baby elephants to defend for themselves.” (cite this) Poachers kill large elephants for their ivory. A young elephant can only survive a day or two without milk. If a mother elephant is killed, it’s baby will die. Asked if she sees any correlation between the decision to auction off the ivory and the number of orphans, Daphne said, "We do. Every time ivory is auctioned legally, there's a rise in poaching. And we also see the correlation in the price that's paid to the poacher for illegal ivory." And that price has gone up. "It's gone from 300 shillings a kilo to 5,000.” says CBS News.  I think that poaching is not good because of reasons like this. It also causes many animals to go extinct and endanger because they became stressed and are not able to reproduce properly. The problem exists because in the 1700’s people started poaching to survive for food and a poacher was considered a hero for providing food for people. But now it has gotten out of hand and many poachers don’t realize that they’re only helping themselves in the short run but in the long run if they keep poaching they will cause animals to die off. There are many ways to stop poaching but it could be very costly.

One solution is to place fish and game wardens in common hunting areas. That way poachers will know that it won’t be easy to get away with poaching. Now, these governments need to send a clear message that poaching will not be tolerated. The past several months, South Africa has employed rhino GPS, police stings and more to stop rhino killings in South Africa's national parks and game preserves. This is a very good thing that they’ve done to stop because poaching because it’s very effective. Also, if it works well then they can use this technique on other animals to stop poaching in other places. Many people, though, would disagree with these ideas because they could end up being very costly and if it’s not as effective as thought of then it could start problems, and more money would have to be used to find another way to stop poaching. However, though, I would say to them that disagree, what if this did work and it helped many animals from going extinct and endangered. Then, also it could send a message to the poachers saying that they will get caught in a matter of time.

Another Solution to this problem is to make fakes of items and sell them to people on the black market and potentially target other poachers that are selling things. Pierre Troubetzkoy. Once said, “Why should man expect his prayer for mercy to be heard by what is above him when he shows no mercy to what is under him? Many people poach for the money and the trophies that come with poaching but what they don’t realize is the penalty for poaching just like this person did. “Michael Eugene Sponseller Jr., 19, of East Berlin, Adams County, was found guilty and sentenced to pay $1,100 in fines and $5,000 in replacement costs for the unlawful poaching of a trophy-class white-tailed deer in York County,” according to Pennsylvania Game Commission officials. The sentence was handed down, on June 29, by Senior Magisterial District Judge Roger Estep, after a hearing in West Manchester Township, York County. Sponseller also faces revocation of hunting privileges for up to six years. That’s one of the examples of what happened to a poacher. You might argue though, that poaching shouldn’t be penalized as bad but what I have to ay to you is if you make a harder punishment the less chance of a poaching wanting to poach again.

Poaching in 2008 had 255 animals tookin were poached for and illegally tookin in some way.  That’s why I think the GPS solution is the best because it would be the most effective and have the biggest impact on the world of poaching. So please just take this into mind and think about what I’ve said about poaching and ways to fix it and get rid of it.
