Warm-up 11/4

Good Morning!

Please answer the following questions in the post.

1. Using http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/montesquieu/montesquieu-bio.html, explain Montesquieu's idea of government and how that affected the U.S. government.

2. Read the first paragraph under The Law of Nature section on http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke-political/#LawNat. Tell me John Locke's view of human nature. Why is this important in forming the Constitution?

  2. 1. Baron De Montesquieu was a guy who created democracy in the U.S. He made the separation of powers. He supported slavery and thought women were weaker than men but he believed they would be able to govern.

  5. he beleived rules never changed. there were three types of powers, a monarchy, a republic, and a despotism. he thought the rules should be equally distributed among these groups. yet he beleived in slavery, he also thought women were weaker then men. but he did think that women should have the right to govern. so he argued that women were to weak to be in control at home, but there gentilness would be good in the goverment.

  8. believed that all things were made up of rules or laws that never changed. he studied these laws scientifically with the hope that knowledge of the laws of government would reduce the problems of society and improve human life. Montesquieu thought that there were three types of government, a monarchy (ruled by a king or queen), a republic (ruled by an elected leader), and a despotism (ruled by a dictator). Montesquieu believed that a government that was elected by the people was the best form of government. he beleived in maintaining the right balance of power.

  16. 1: he called the idea of dividing government power into three branches.That way, there wouldn't be too much power for 1 individual.

    2: In the Christian religion, nature is known as a creation from God. Natural law can be discovered by reason alone and applies to all people, while divine law can be discovered only through God's special revelation and applies only to those whom it is revealed.

He believed that a government made up by the people was the best form of government. He did believe that that the success of a democracy was the best way of keeping a balanced government. He also believed that three groups of officials were in charge: king-enforced laws, Parliament- made laws, and English courts- interpreted laws

    2. as a way of expressing the idea that there were certain truths that applied to all people, regardless of the particular place where they lived or the agreements they had made. The most important contrast was between the law of nature.

  19. Baron de Montesquieu was a great government official. He believed that everything was made up of rules and laws that could not be changed. According to him there were three parts of the government. The monarch which is like the [president today, the republic, and despotism (which is ruled by a dictator). He also believed that the people needed to elect to government. His ideas are still inforced in todays government. We still have three types of government and all canidates are elected by the people.

    2. It is important to the constitution because he had the theory of natural law and natural rights.

  24. 1. That the best form of government was when the offices were elected by people. Also, thought that three offices had different but equal powers. lastly, that women had the right to govern just as much as men.

    2.He thought that the Law of Nature was expressing ideas and curtain moral truths to people, and was important to live up to the laws even if you don't like them.
